Foundational Principles

These principles are fundamental and require commitment. They must be embraced and consistently nurtured to develop any leader.

  • Self-Awareness helps develop a leadership style that is authentically consistent with values and ideals while being more aware of what is needed to be a successful communicator and leader.

  • Other awareness is committing to taking the time, effort, and energy to learn about another person and understand their desires, objectives, and goals.

  • Utilizing self-awareness and other awareness principles helps to establish a relationship of connection and trust. Balancing these principles will also support personal relationship goals while establishing a strong foundation to align and achieve organizational objectives.

Our 12 Rules of Building a Leadership Culture

Once these three principles have been established, one can adopt these leadership rules to help navigate the challenges of engaging, motivating, and inspiring a team while building a leadership culture.

  • Inclusion is building an environment where diversity happens organically and people are heard, acknowledged, and appreciated. This is not something that happens overnight or without intentionality.

  • No one feels safe when being led by a chaotic or stressed-out leader. Words and actions have an impact. Being emotionally intelligent and managing emotions are critical in today’s workforce environment.

  • Engaging teammates is important in making them believe in the skills and capability to do the job that is required.

  • The heart of leadership cultures is coaching and mentoring. By developing a coaching/mentoring mind-set, relationships are reinforced and potential leaders are nurtured while maintaining and passing on the knowledge and expertise of experienced leaders.

  • It is essential to give teammates a clear sense of importance and priority in the tasks assigned and the expectations of the team.

  • One of the most important and critical success factors to organizational health is transparency. Creating an environment where consistent information, awareness of the decision making processes, and insight to how everyone will move forward as a collective team will help build and foster trust and accountability.

  • It is a leader’s responsibility to create a failure-tolerant environment and to recognize the learning that can come from it. Adaptability, flexibility, and having a growth mindset are skills that look different for each person. We utilize the self and other awareness principles to help each person discover their unique abilities and how they best work to build their resilience. Focusing on shared goals and expectations, as well as reframing failures as shared responsibility, organizations can come together to work as a team to acknowledge and learn from setbacks while building trust.

  • Transitions can be challenging. There is always a shared responsibility for embracing the art of transition in addition to recognizing the emotions attached to it.

  • Communication is an extension of an existing conversation that is already in place with someone that any leader can have a connection with. Feedback, evaluation, on-boarding, conflict resolution, career planning, and difficult conversations are easier when authentic relationships are established and the organization operates in a culture of leadership.

  • Leading with integrity and a commitment to a behavior of doing what is ‘right’ is a habit. It needs to be recognized, prioritized, and developed so that when the hard stuff hits, leaders have the tools to stay true to a moral compass.

  • Being a part of a successful organization is the goal. This is where consistency and accountability come into play. The difference in leadership as opposed to managing is how leaders inspire others to get results.

  • Being curious is being intentional and connecting with others in authentic ways. Learning how to ask questions and actively listen is critical. With authentic curiosity, organizations drive innovation, collaboration, and creativity.
